Borrowing Privileges and Responsibilities
Library users may borrow materials according to their current status. User groups are divided into two major groups: University Users and Courtesy Users. Please see below for the specific policies and procedures for the different users and user groups.
University Users
University users are those individuals with a current, working relationship with The University of Texas at Tyler. They include: current undergraduate and graduate students (earning credit hours on either a full-time or part-time basis), current faculty (including adjuncts), and current staff. The following information is applicable to all university users, unless otherwise noted.
- University users must register with a valid, UT-Tyler ID card at the Circulation Desk upon their initial visit to the library.**Students must register at the circulation desk each semester.
- Limited Access materials may be checked out for 1 week, no renewals, maximum of 3.
- Remote off campus database access is available to all University Users. **An adjunct faculty member should provide an official copy of his/her UT-Tyler appointment letter (with beginning and end dates) to the Acquisitions Librarian so that access to the databases may be created for the length of the appointment.
- Interlibrary Loan Materials are checked out for periods determined by the lending institution. More information about ILL.
- Special Collections materials may be used in the University Archives and Special Collections Reading Room. Please call 903-565-5748 to make arrangements to view these items or email the University Archivist and Special Collections Llibrarian.

Courtesy Users
Courtesy users are those patrons who do not have a current relationship with the university (either as a credit-enrolled student or current university employee). Borrowing privileges are extended to these individuals as a courtesy from the library. Courtesy users may include the following: audit students, retired or emeritus faculty, UT-Tyler alumni, TexShare borrowers, other community borrowers. The following information is applicable to all courtesy users, unless otherwise noted.
- Library cards are non-transferable.
- Access to databases is provided from within the Library on one of our courtesy computers. No remote access is available.
- Cost for printing is $.10 per page
- Audio-Visual materials (including phonograph records) may be checked out 1 at a time for up to 3 hours, in-house use only.
- Limited Access items may be checked out for 3 hour in-house use only, 1 at a time.
- Interlibrary Loan Services are not available for most courtesy users, please contact your local public library to obtain this service. **Retired/emeritus faculty may contact the interlibrary loan librarian for limited ILL services.

In general, any member of the community, age 18 or over, may apply for a Courtesy Borrowers Card at the Circulation Desk. Approval is based upon the applicant's ability to show intention of using the library for academic research of some type, along with several other criteria. All applicants must present current i.d. (i.e. driver's license) with current address information. Additional information pertaning to the specific borrower type is provided on the schedule below:
