From the Black History Files:Jean Baptiste Point du Sable
Jean Baptiste Point du Sable (1745?-1818)
William Loren Katz in Black Indians says that Jean Baptiste Point du Sable -- founder of Chicago -- was "born somewhere in the Caribbean." The Encyclopedia of Black America says "his place of birth has been listed as Santo Domingo, Haiti, and French Canada," while the Encyclopaedia Britannica says he was "said to have been born in Haiti." Haiti and the Dominican Republic are the two independent nations sharing the island Columbus called Hispaniola, and since du Sable was born before either country gained its independence, both of them claim bragging rights to being the birthplace of the man who founded "the City of the Big Shoulders," as poet Carl Sandburg called Chicago -- the city el Nelson Al gren, Studs Terkel, Big Bill Broonzy, and the Bulls.
